Surfing in San Francisco

Sometimes people ask me “So, how is surfing in San Francisco?” and most of the time I don’t know how to describe it. Cold? Yes. Rough? Oh yes. The water is freezing from November to June. Surfing here means blue lips and constant paddling against the current. Strong wind in your face all the time. No sexy strolling around in a bikini while holding a cold beer or showing off your tanned body (Wait, what tan??). But surfing here also means saying hi to dolphins and sea lions in the water. Or watching those extremely cool surfers at Ocean Beach who are not scared of huge waves and sharks. Pure happiness when the sun comes out and you feel like you are in South California. Or the magic moment when you approach the city on Highway 101 on your way back home and you suddenly see the skyline in front of you. The next time I get this question I will just show him or her this video which was shot in the Bay Area. It sums it up – surfing here is pretty amazing actually.
